Anchor Lou Dobbs says he's leaving CNN

Nov 11, 2009 @ 07:18 PM, Entertainment, Howard Kurtz

Lou Dobbs, the most opinionated and divisive anchor at a cable network that bills itself as a straight-news oasis, resigned from CNN last night, saying he wants "to go beyond the role" of a television journalist in tackling the country's problems.

Saying he is acting at the urging of "some leaders in media, politics and business," Dobbs struck a populist tone, attempting to position himself as a political leader who would take on "the lack of true representation in Washington, D.C." He said that public debate was now defined by "partisanship and ideology" and that he would continue to speak out "in the most honest and direct language possible."

Liberal groups such as NDN and Media Matters had mounted a "Dump Dobbs" campaign, and Latino organizations challenged such Dobbs declarations as his 2006 statement that about a third of the U.S. prison population "is estimated to be illegal aliens"Âżwhich the anchor later acknowledged was way off. But his position at CNN seemed secure, even as the network touted itself as a down-the-middle alternative to right-leaning Fox News and left-leaning MSNBC.

'Sesame Street's' 40th anniversary; Yinka Shonibare's talk at the Hirshhorn article video

Nov 11, 2009 @ 01:15 AM, Entertainment, Washington Post

Art Meet the Artist: Yinka Shonibare

If you've been to the Hirshhorn's "Strange Bodies" exhibition, then you've probably seen the work of Nigerian-born artist Yinka Shonibare, whose mind-bending piece "The Age of Enlightenment -- Antoine Lavoisier" features a headless man in 18th-century garb made from African textiles. The artist has many more such curious works in his arsenal, and the National Museum of African Art is hosting a mid-career survey of his work. In conjunction with that show, Shonibare will be paying a visit to the Hirshhorn to discuss his series of headless works, the large-scale splatterlike installation "Black Gold I" and more from his career so far.

7 p.m. Thursday. Hirshhorn Museum, Independence Avenue at Seventh Street SW. 202-633-1000 or http://hirshhorn.si.edu. Free.

LOS ANGELES — He shed tears on the show and once fought for his spot with a dance-off, but Aaron Carter has performed his last dance on "Dancing With the Stars."

The 21-year-old singer and his professional partner, Karina Smirnoff, were eliminated from the hit ABC show Tuesday.

Carter cried early in the competition after harsh remarks from the judges. Last week, he beat out former football star Michael Irvin in a dance-off to keep his spot on the show. He came into Tuesday's episode tied for last place with fellow dancer Donny Osmond, but viewer votes failed to keep the younger entertainer afloat.

'Mad Men': Sterling, Cooper, Draper and Pryce article video

Nov 9, 2009 @ 04:16 AM, Entertainment, Los Angeles Times

Company600

Those who have complained that “Mad Men” leans too hard on soap opera gauziness finally got their dose of white-knuckled logistics with the finale of Season 3. “Shut the Door. Have a Seat” was a tight balance of emotionally pungent drama and company coup d’etat. From Ossining to Madison Avenue, alliances were strengthened, broken or realigned. It wasn’t always a pretty sight, but for every bedroom face-off, we got zesty moments such as Joan at her most deliciously officious, ransacking manila folders and teasing Roger.

P.S. Until next season, I’ll be at the last seat at the end of the bar, nursing a martini, nibbling on a shrimp cocktail, maybe sketching an idea or two on a cocktail napkin. The comments section is forever open, just like some old dive in Greenwich Village with twinkling lights and bohemian poets in the corner, plotting the next unforeseen revolution. Belle Jolie kisses to you all.I'll see you soon.
