WINDERMERE, Fla. — Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin, are expected to talk to police for the first time Sunday, breaking a two-day silence that has only fueled speculation about his early morning accident, why he left the house at that hour, where he was going and whether an argument preceded the crash.

Sunday could deliver two bits of information — what the world's No. 1 golfer has to say about the accident or perhaps the 911 tapes that the Florida Highway Patrol said it would release once authorities have reviewed the call.

Sgt. Kim Montes, the patrol spokeswoman, said she expected troopers to return to Woods' house when they report for duty around 3 p.m. Sunday. She said FHP investigations into minor collisions don't normally drag on for days, but this isn't the first time that one has stretched on.

Op-Ed Contributor Donahue Talked, Oprah Listened article video

Nov 28, 2009 @ 07:41 PM, Entertainment, Deborah Tannen

Washington

SINCE Oprah Winfrey decided to end her show, many people have praised her shrewd business sense. But there’s another aspect to her genius that accounts for her phenomenal success: her gift for connecting personally with her audience. Phil Donahue may have pioneered the daytime TV format, but Ms. Winfrey transformed it from report-talk, focused on information, to rapport-talk — the telling of secrets and personal troubles that drives many women’s friendships.

I experienced the difference firsthand when I appeared on both “The Phil Donahue Show” and “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to talk about differences in women’s and men’s conversational styles. Before my 1990 “Donahue” appearance, the producers asked me to devise two lists of statements, one more likely to be said by women, one more likely to be said by men. These were put on the screen in pairs periodically throughout the show. Also, a video I had made contrasting how boys and girls sit while talking to their friends (girls facing each other, boys at angles) was shown, and the experiment was replicated with members of the studio audience. Mr. Donahue took questions from audience members and telephone callers.

Polanski's posh Swiss chalet being prepped for director's release from prison article video

Nov 28, 2009 @ 08:17 AM, Entertainment, Los Angeles Times

It appears officials are preparing Roman Polanski's Swiss chalet for the director's release from prison under electronic monitoring.

Polanski is expected to be freed by Monday after a Swiss court agreed to $4.5-million bail. A court will eventually rule whether Polanski should be extradited to Los Angeles to face sentencing for having illegal sex with a 13-year-old more than three decades ago. Swiss justice officials repeatedly had denied his bail requests, saying he is a flight risk.Under the terms of the bail, Polanski, 76, would be restricted to his chalet in Gstaad, a ski resort with mountain views. The village of 2,500 has long been known as a celebrity hangout, having been home to Elizabeth Taylor, Roger Moore and David Niven, among others.

An Associated Press reporter went to the chalet, which appeared to be filled with activity:

Zac Efron, looking for a curveball to swing at article video

It isn't those astonishingly blue eyes that stick in the memory, though they are admittedly striking.

It's not the fact that he actually, earnestly, uses the word "neat" in casual conversation.

No, of all the things observed during an hour in the presence of Zac Efron, "High School Musical" heartthrob and star of the new indie film "Me and Orson Welles," the one trait that makes the strongest, most lasting impression is this: his impeccable manners.

GSTAAD, Switzerland — Security experts on Saturday started preparing Roman Polanski's Alpine chalet for the movie director's house arrest while Swiss authorities consider whether to extradite him to the United States.

A Hummer bearing the sign in French "DR Securite Services" was parked outside the empty three-story building Saturday morning, while three men and a woman took photographs of the property and spent about an hour inside.

They declined to say what they were doing, but the company handles a range of services from video surveillance to alarm installations and armored doors.

Rehousing a Miami Collection article video

Nov 27, 2009 @ 11:50 PM, Entertainment, Brett Sokol

THE annual Art Basel Miami Beach dinner parties hosted by Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, two of the area’s most prominent art collectors, were once the fair’s most coveted ticket. But so many guests would arrive at the couple’s Key Biscayne mansion — one year, over 1,000 party-crashers tried to talk or sneak their way inside — that the bash has since been drastically scaled down. But this week Basel party people will find the de la Cruz home not only quiet but relatively empty.

Over the last month, much of the de la Cruz art collection has been moved into a new three-story, 30,000-square-foot building in Miami’s Design District, set to open to the public on Dec. 3. It’s the latest example of what the critic Tyler Green recently christened the Miami Model: pre-eminent art collectors opening their own de facto museums.

The De La Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space (23 NE 41st Street; 305-576-6112; delacruzcollection.org) not only follows similar endeavors owned by local über-collectors like Mera and Don Rubell, Ella Fontanals Cisneros, and Martin Margulies, its exhibition area exceeds that of both the Miami Art Museum and North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA).

GENEVA — Roman Polanski will remain in a jail outside Zurich for at least three more days until he meets the security conditions of his bail, a Swiss official said Friday.

Polanski wouldn't be placed under house arrest in Switzerland before Monday, because he has yet to fulfill all the requirements to ensure that he stays in his chalet in the Swiss luxury resort of Gstaad, Justice Ministry spokesman Folco Galli said.

Galli did not elaborate, but the 76-year-old director must post $4.5 million bail, surrender his identity papers and be fitted with a monitoring bracelet.

Arts, Briefly No Appeal on Polanski Bail article video

Nov 26, 2009 @ 09:11 PM, Entertainment, Matthew Saltmarsh; Compiled By Patrick Healy

Swiss officials said on Thursday that they would not challenge a court ruling permitting Roman Polanski to be freed on bail as he fights extradition to the United States to face sentencing for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. On Wednesday the Swiss Federal Criminal Court granted Mr. Polanski’s appeal against detention in exchange for $4.5 million, along with other guarantees like the surrender of his identity papers to ensure he does not leave the country. Still, Interpol issued an advisory to its 188 member countries saying that Mr. Polanski should be arrested if he tried to travel. He fled the United States in 1978 before being sentenced. The Justice Ministry had 10 days to submit an appeal to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court, but said on Thursday that it had decided not to. The development means that Mr. Polanski may leave his jail cell and remain under house arrest and electronic monitoring at his holiday chalet, above, in Gstaad, a Swiss resort town.
