Matt Hasselbeck threw for 216 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Seattle Seahawks to a 14-10 victory over host Kansas City on Saturday night in a preseason game in which the Chiefs lost quarterback Matt Cassel to a leg injury.

Cassel was injured the first time he dropped back to pass, dragged down from behind by Brandon Mebane after the pocket collapsed. Cassel called timeout, then limped toward the locker room and did not return.

Signed in the off-season to a six-year, $63 million contract with a guarantee of $28 million, Cassel had a mediocre first preseason game against Houston, then spent last week’s game against Minnesota running around because of numerous offensive line breakdowns. Cassel was supposed to play into the third quarter against the Seahawks.

It was not clear if he would be available for the preseason finale Thursday against St. Louis.

Edgerrin James, the N.F.L.’s active rushing leader, who signed with Seattle on Tuesday, spent the game in sweats, taking notes.

BELICHICK SAYS BRADY IS O.K. If there was anything wrong with Tom Brady’s throwing shoulder, New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick would not say.

Belichick said Saturday that Brady came out of Friday night’s preseason game, a 27-24 victory over Washington, after a crushing hit from Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth because it was time for the coaches to take a look at the backups. He lumped any problem with Brady’s right shoulder into the category of normal “bumps and bruises” from a physical game.

“I’m saying that we made the decision to play other quarterbacks in the Washington game because we wanted them to play,” Belichick said in a conference call with reporters.

NO ISSUE FOR ROETHLISBERGER Ben Roethlisberger played a nearly flawless first half in his first game since injuring his right foot, James Farrior had a 22-yard interception for a touchdown and Buffalo’s starting offense struggled as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the visiting Bills, 17-0, in a preseason game.

Roethlisberger led two scoring drives while going 15 of 19 for 168 yards and a 103.5 passer rating, showing why Coach Mike Tomlin did not seem all that worried when Roethlisberger bruised his foot during practice Aug 20.

QUINN MAY HAVE EDGE One perfect pass may have pushed Brady Quinn over the top.

Quinn threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Edwards and outplayed Derek Anderson in perhaps their final auditions for Coach Eric Mangini to be Cleveland’s starting quarterback. The Browns beat the visiting Tennessee Titans, 23-17, in a preseason game.

Quinn finished 11 of 15 for 128 yards. He led the Browns to one touchdown and two field goals in four series.

Anderson went 7 of 11 for 77 yards and led the Browns to one field goal on two possessions. He did not have an interception, but one poorly thrown ball was dropped by a Titans cornerback.

NO PUNTING PROBLEMS The second game in the Dallas Cowboys’ new $1.15 billion home — a 20-13 preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers — did not feature a single punt that hit the overhead video boards. The giant board had been such a source of attention that the league issued a ruling about how to handle such a situation. In pregame warm-ups, however, San Francisco punter Andy Lee reached the 90-foot-high board solidly with one punt.

LIONS STILL UNDECIDED Daunte Culpepper and Matthew Stafford seemed to do enough to keep the Detroit Lions’ quarterback competition wide open.

Culpepper completed 7 of 12 passes for 67 yards for a touchdown, and Stafford was 13 of 19 for 160 yards and an interception to help Detroit beat the visiting Indianapolis Colts, 18-17, in a preseason game.

BREES SHARP FOR SAINTS Drew Brees seemed to be in midseason form, completing 14 of 17 passes for 179 yards and driving the New Orleans Saints to touchdowns on all three drives he played in a 45-7 preseason victory over the host Oakland Raiders.

The Saints were able to move the ball with ease even without the top running backs Pierre Thomas (knee) and Reggie Bush (calf).

VICK WILL PLAY AGAINST JETS Michael Vick will play in the Eagles’ final preseason game Thursday night against the Jets at Giants Stadium, and he may even take some snaps as a conventional quarterback. Vick was in for six Wildcat plays in Thursday’s game against Jacksonville, throwing four times, running once and handing the ball off once. How much Vick will play has yet to be determined, Eagles Coach Andy Reid said.

LEFTWICH WILL START The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback derby is over. Byron Leftwich will start the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Buccaneers Coach Raheem Morris selected Leftwich over Luke McCown, saying Leftwich held an edge going into training camp and retained it with steady-if-unspectacular play through three preseason games.

PALMER UNSURE OF STATUS Quarterback Carson Palmer said his sprained left ankle was improving but that he did not know whether the Cincinnati Bengals’ medical staff would let him play in the final preseason game Thursday against the Colts.

The Bengals expect him to be ready for the season opener Sept. 13 against the Denver Broncos.

AROUND THE LEAGUE The former Pro Bowl offensive tackle Marvel Smith has retired from the San Francisco 49ers after being hampered by back problems during training camp. ... Shawn Andrews, a two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman for the Eagles, practiced for the first time since reinjuring his surgically repaired back during the first day of training camp.
