Iverson Planning to Retire, Report Says
Allen Iverson is set to retire from the N.B.A., an online report said.
The commentator Stephen A. Smith on Wednesday published a statement attributed to Iverson on his Web site. In it Iverson said he planned to retire but added, “I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.”
Iverson, a 10-time All-Star who played three games with the Memphis Grizzlies before taking a leave of absence, was waived Nov. 17. He left the Detroit Pistons on bad terms last spring after chafing at a reserve role.
The Knicks considered signing Iverson last week, but decided to focus instead on developing a young core.
PACERS 86, CLIPPERS 73 Troy Murphy had 18 points and 11 rebounds as host Indiana ended its losing streak at four games. The Pacers played without Danny Granger, who was out with a sprained knee ligament.
BOBCATS 116, RAPTORS 81 Gerald Wallace scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, leading host Charlotte to the most lopsided victory in the team’s six-year history.
KINGS ASSISTANT GAMBLED The Sacramento Kings said they were informed by the N.B.A. that the team’s former assistant director of scouting, Jack Mai, gambled while on their staff. The Kings fired Mai in January. Last season was his eighth with the franchise.
